The USGS said on Twitter that the tremor was "too small" to issue an alert on local cell phones. Preliminary USGS data said the center of the quake was about 10 miles south of Malibu Beach.

"We know some of you are shivering and we would appreciate it if you could take protective measures such as dropping, covering or holding," the official said.

In a warning, the Los Angeles Fire Department said it had entered "earthquake mode," adding it would begin investigating damage at all 106 fire stations in the city. "This survey will be conducted from land, air and sea," the warning said. "Once this process is complete and the reports are consolidated, seismic mode will be complete, barring significant damage."
