9-year-old Girl Killed In Orlando Shooting Remembered / She Was A Bright Light For So Many: How Did This Happen?
An attacker accused of killing a woman in the Orlando area returned to the area hours later and killed four others, killing a reporter covering the initial shooting and a 9-year-old boy. said the Florida police.
Spectrum News 13 identified the reporter killed Thursday as Dylan Lyons. Photographer Jesse Walden was also injured.
What's behind the spike in murders of journalists around the world?
The two were in an anonymous media vehicle on Wednesday afternoon covering the first murder when a man approached them and shot them dead, the Orange Sheriff said County, John Mina, at a press conference. The man then went to a nearby house where he shot the young girl and seriously injured her mother.
The sheriff said police arrested Keith Melvin Moses, 19, who they believe was responsible for all the shootings.
Mina said the police did not immediately know the reason for the shooting. He said Moses was an acquaintance of the first victim but did not appear to be related to any of the others. He said it was unclear whether Moses knew two of those shot were reporters, noting that their vehicle did not look like a typical news van or have the station's logo on it.
It was not immediately clear whether Moses had an attorney who could speak for him.
"I want to acknowledge how awful today has been for our community and our media partners," Mina told a roomful of reporters. "Nobody in our community -- not a mother, not a 9-year-old and certainly not a professional -- should experience gun violence in our community."
awmakers in the Pine Hills area, northwest of Orlando, responded to reports Wednesday morning that a 20-year-old woman had been shot.
Lyons and Walden were shot dead hours later while reporting the shooting, followed by the mother and daughter, police and witnesses said. WFTV crews, also covering the morning's shooting, attempted to get medical assistance to Spectrum 13 reporters.
Mina said Moses has already been charged with first-degree murder for the first victim and charges against the other four victims are expected soon. The sheriff said Moses' prior convictions included one count of gunfire, assault and battery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and larceny.
"Our hearts go out to the family of the reporter killed today and the injured crew member in Orange County, Fla. and the entire Spectrum News team," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tweeted.
“Please, please pray tonight for our colleague who is in critical condition. And while you're at it, pray for every gun violence victim in this country," Spectrum 13 reporter Celeste Springer said during her live coverage Wednesday night.
In an article published Thursday morning, the station identified Lyon and Walden.
“(Lyon) took his job very seriously. He loved his career. He loved what he did," said journalist and Spectrum Sports 360 friend Josh Miller. “He loved the community, he shared people's stories, covered the news and was just passionate about what he did.
Lyons was born and raised in Philadelphia and is a graduate of the University of Central Florida, the broadcaster said. Before joining Spectrum News, he worked for a broadcaster in Gainesville.
Rachel Lyons, the reporter's older sister, is raising money for his funeral on a GoFundMe account. He wrote that Lyon would have turned 25 in March. He also left his parents and his fiancé behind.
